7 Essential Steps to Prepare Your Car for Shipping: A Vinmove Guide
Planning to ship your car? Follow Vinmove's 7-step guide to prepare your vehicle for safe transport. Learn about cleaning, personal items, fuel levels, and more for a stress-free experience.

Preparing your vehicle for transport is the most critical step in ensuring a seamless and damage-free shipping experience. Whether you are relocating across the country, purchasing a vehicle online, or moving a high-value classic, proper preparation prevents delays and protects your investment.

At Vinmove Auto Transport, we’ve simplified the process into 7 actionable steps to complete before your carrier arrives.

Step 1: Wash and Inspect Your Vehicle

A clean car makes it much easier to document any existing dents, scratches, or paint chips. This protects both you and the carrier by creating an undeniable record for the Bill of Lading (BOL) inspection.

  • Thoroughly wash the exterior.

  • Take high-quality photos of all sides, the roof, and the wheels.

  • Note any mechanical quirks or cosmetic issues in writing.

Step 2: Remove All Personal Items

Auto transport carriers are not licensed to transport household goods. Personal items are generally not covered by the carrier's insurance and can lead to weight violations or safety hazards.

  • Clear out the cabin and trunk.

  • Remove electronics, chargers, car seats, and tools.

  • Vinmove Policy: While we recommend an empty car, customers may store up to 100 lbs of personal items in the trunk/cargo area, provided they are secured below the window line (at the owner's risk).

Step 3: Secure or Remove Loose Parts

Exterior modifications can be fragile during transit or add unexpected height to the shipment.

  • Remove or retract antennas.

  • Take off roof racks, bike racks, or custom spoilers.

  • If you have a convertible, ensure the top is fully secured and locked to prevent damage from road debris.

Step 4: Disable Alarms and Toll Tags

To avoid unnecessary disruptions or fees during the journey:

  • Turn off car alarms.

  • Remove or deactivate toll passes (E-ZPass, SunPass, etc.) to prevent them from being charged as the truck passes through toll plazas.

  • For EVs like Teslas, disable "Sentry Mode" to prevent battery drain.

Step 5: Check for Leaks and Mechanical Issues

Your vehicle must be able to roll, brake, and steer under its own power for standard transport.

  • Check oil, coolant, and tire pressure.

  • Ensure the battery is charged and the car starts reliably.

  • Important: If your vehicle is "Inoperable" (cannot be driven), please notify Vinmove in advance. Specialized equipment is required to load non-running vehicles.

Step 6: Maintain Proper Fuel/Battery Levels

A full tank of gas adds significant weight to the carrier. We recommend keeping your gas tank at 1/4 (one-quarter) full. This provides enough fuel for loading and unloading without the extra weight.

  • For EVs: Maintain a battery charge between 45% and 65% for optimal safety and efficiency.

Step 7: Prepare Keys and Documentation

The driver will need a set of keys to move the vehicle on and off the trailer during transit.

  • Provide one full set of keys (including the trunk and glove box).

  • Keep a spare set for yourself—do not give away your only copy!

  • Have your contact information and any special starting instructions ready for the driver at pickup.
